Some easy-to-follow tips to safeguard yourself from potential AI Scams

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the world, and unfortunately, that includes the world of scams. According to Cert NZ, scammers are now using AI to create more sophisticated and convincing scams than ever before.

Here are some tips on how to stay safe from AI scams:

Be suspicious of unsolicited communications.

If you receive an email, text message, or phone call from someone you don’t know, be wary. AI can be used to create realistic-looking emails and messages that appear to be from legitimate companies or people.

Don’t click on links in unsolicited messages.

If you’re not sure whether a message is legitimate, don’t click on any links in it. Instead, go directly to the company’s website or contact them by phone.

Beware of urgent requests.

Scammers often use a sense of urgency to pressure people into making quick decisions. If someone is asking you to act quickly, especially if it involves financial information, it’s probably a scam.

Be skeptical of unexpected or out-of-character requests.

If you receive a message from someone you know that seems strange or out of character, be careful. AI can be used to create deepfakes, which are videos or audio recordings that have been manipulated to make it look like someone is saying or doing something they never actually said or did.

Guard your personal information.

Never share your personal information, such as your Social Security number, bank account number, or credit card number, with someone you don’t know and trust.

Stay informed.

Keep up-to-date with the latest AI scams and tactics. You can do this by reading news articles, following cybersecurity experts on social media, and signing up for email alerts from government agencies and consumer protection organizations.

Here are some additional tips that can help you stay safe from AI scams:

If you think you may have been a victim of an AI scam, it’s important to report it to the authorities and to the company or organization that was impersonated in the scam. You should also change your passwords and monitor your financial accounts for any unusual activity.

By following these tips, you can help protect yourself from AI scams.
